Surabaya Zoo
One day, I visited Surabaya Zoo on the weekend with my friends. We had been planning this trip for weeks, eager to escape the daily grind and immerse ourselves in nature. That morning, we gathered at my house, packed some snacks and drinks, and set off on our adventure. The drive to the zoo was filled with excited chatter and laughter as we anticipated the day ahead. We arrived at the zoo in the early afternoon, greeted by the sight of families, tourists, and locals who had also chosen to spend their weekend there. The entrance was bustling, with children running around and parents trying to keep up. The sun was high, casting a bright light over the entrance. We waited in line to buy our tickets, which cost 15 thousand rupiah per person. After purchasing four tickets, we eagerly made our way inside.
As soon as we entered, we were drawn to a small crowd gathered around a staff member holding a magnificent bird. The staff member was conducting an educational attraction, sharing fascinating facts about the bird's species, habitat, and behavior. One of my friends, who is particularly fond of birds, was instantly captivated. She approached the staff member and asked if she could hold the bird. With a friendly smile, the staff member gently placed the bird on her hand. The bird perched calmly, occasionally flapping its wings, much to my friend's delight. She beamed with joy, and we could tell this moment had already made her day. We continued our tour, wandering through the various sections of the zoo, each filled with its own unique set of animals. Our first major stop was the big cat area. The majestic tigers were a highlight, their powerful presence commanding our attention. We watched in awe as one of the tigers prowled around its enclosure, its muscles rippling beneath its striped coat. Nearby, the lions lounged in the shade, their regal manes catching the light. The sheer size and grace of these animals left us speechless.
Next, we found ourselves in the primate section, where the playful monkeys swung from tree to tree, delighting visitors with their antics. The chimpanzees were particularly entertaining, using sticks to fish for termites and engaging in mock fights. We spent a good amount of time here, laughing at their clever tricks and marveling at their human-like behavior. There was even a family of orangutans, with a baby clinging to its mother, adding a touch of tenderness to our experience. As we strolled further, we encountered the elephant enclosure. The massive creatures moved gracefully, their trunks reaching out to interact with the crowd. One of the elephants even performed a small trick, raising its trunk high in the air and trumpeting, much to the delight of the spectators. We watched as the elephants were fed large bundles of grass, their trunks skillfully grabbing and guiding the food to their mouths. The bond between the elephants and their handlers was evident, and it was heartwarming to see such care and respect for these gentle giants.
Feeling a bit tired, we took a break at the zoo café. We found a shaded table and enjoyed some local snacks and refreshing drinks. The atmosphere was lively, with families and groups of friends all around, sharing laughter and stories. The café overlooked a serene pond filled with colorful koi fish, adding to the peaceful ambiance. We took our time, soaking in the environment and discussing our favorite animals so far. After our break, we resumed our adventure, this time heading to the reptile house. My friend, who was still buzzing from her bird encounter, was now eager to see the snakes. The variety of reptiles on display was impressive. We saw small, colorful lizards with vibrant scales, and enormous pythons coiled in their enclosures, their eyes watching us with a steady gaze. There was also an enormous crocodile basking under a heat lamp, its rough, armored skin glistening. The reptile house was dimly lit, adding an air of mystery and excitement to our exploration.
One of the highlights of our visit was the nocturnal house. Inside, the dim lighting recreated the animals' natural nighttime environment. We saw bats hanging upside down, their wings wrapped around them like blankets. There were also owls, their eyes wide and luminous, and tiny sugar gliders leaping from branch to branch with incredible agility. The nocturnal house was filled with strange sounds and shadows, making us feel like we were in another world. We also visited the aviary, a large, enclosed space where various birds flew freely. It was a burst of color and sound, with parrots, peacocks, and exotic birds displaying their vibrant feathers. We spent a good amount of time here, marveling at the beauty and diversity of the avian world. My bird-loving friend was in her element, pointing out different species and sharing interesting facts with us.
As we made our way through the zoo, we encountered various other animals, each with its own story and charm. The kangaroos hopped around their enclosure, their powerful legs propelling them with ease. The hippos lounged in their pond, occasionally surfacing to yawn widely. We saw zebras grazing peacefully, their black-and-white stripes creating a mesmerizing pattern. We took a leisurely walk through the botanical garden area, where we admired the beautiful plants and flowers. This section of the zoo was a tranquil escape, with benches where visitors could sit and enjoy the natural beauty. We took some photos here, capturing the vibrant colors and lush greenery. As the day drew to a close, we made our way to the exit, but not before stopping at the souvenir shop. The shop was filled with plush toys, t-shirts, and other memorabilia featuring the zoo's various animals. We picked up a few mementos to remember our day at the zoo. I bought a small tiger keychain, while my bird-loving friend chose a beautiful feathered necklace. Another friend picked up a colorful mug with pictures of different animals, and our last friend opted for a hat featuring the zoo's logo.
The sun was setting as we left, casting a warm, golden glow over the bustling city of Surabaya. We were tired but happy, our hearts full from the day's adventures. It was a memorable day, filled with laughter, excitement, and a deeper appreciation for the wonderful creatures we share our planet with. As we made our way back home, we all agreed that we would definitely visit Surabaya Zoo again in the future, eager for another day of exploration and wonder. On the drive back, we reminisced about our favorite moments and talked about the animals we wanted to see next time. The conversation flowed easily, and it was clear that the day had brought us even closer as friends. By the time we arrived home, we were exhausted but content, already looking forward to our next adventure together.
